Long overdue

Hello,
This update is long overdue but I have been very busy with the variety show. Please see below for the exit project. As well check back after christmas holidays, I should have our recordings, videos etc posted. Happy holidays.

Exit Project - Portfolio
A portfolio is a collection of specific selections of your work that represent you. It should be organized, and include a variety of samples of work. Your selections should reflect your skill development, examples of best work, and personal interests. The portfolio should reflect you and your personality but be a professional representation of your musical skills and interests. Your Final portfolio will be either a Myspace page (digital portfolio) or a Binder with hard copies of your work. Your portfolio will include the following:

1. Philosophy and Goals – Short paragraph about your attitude to music and career goals.
2. Samples of Work
a. Video of a performance
b. Sound recording
3. Professional Information – List of skills and past experience.
4. Awards, certificates
5. Photo (s) of you
6. Portfolio cover – Earlier assignment, just scan it of attach it in the binder.

Marking Scheme:
25 marks for planning portfolio and being ready
30% of Final Mark- Portfolio Rubric (Final Product)

Planning/To do for Portfolio
Task Done
1. Write short paragraph about yourself – edit and do good copy
2. Obtain a video of you performing – schedule one, use one from a friend, do it at home…etc
3. Practice and prepare a song for recording – Schedule a recording or bring in your recording done at home.
4. List your skills and past music related experiences – Edit and do a good copy
5. Find and scan/include any awards, certificates or music related references
6. Get some good digital photos of yourself, upload them, or print them.
7. Find portfolio cover, or redesign one
8. Upload all material to a myspace page and email Winnie.hsu@nbed.nb.ca with you finished page address or print and put together your binder/portfolio and hand in to Ms. Hsu.
9. Move on to a fulfilling life…good luck.

Melody Unit

We are starting a new unit - Melody and composition.
You will be studying how to phrase music and use repetition to create a unified form/structure in your compositions.
This is an independent work unit.
Work hard and focus. Build on your previous knowledge.

First Composition Assignment

Objective: Compose at piece of at least 24 bars that is written musically accurate.

• Using your chosen instrument and music knowledge you will compose a piece of music of at least 24 bars with all the right markings and instructions for someone else to replicate it.
• Your piece will be in Rondo form which is Theme A, Theme B, Theme A (Each theme should be 8 bars)
• Your piece will only have 1 melody line and no harmony, it can be in bass or treble clef. If you use tab, you have to translate it into staff.

Evaluation
Format Muscially accurate, dynamics, tempo, title, time signature, key signature etc /50
Presentation Tidy, legible /10
Form ABA form /10
Replication Can someone else play it and it sounds like you play it? /30

Welcome

Hello Grade 11 and 12 students and parents,
I am so excited about having another opportunity to teach you. Music 112 is an advanced and challenging class where you will learn advanced music theory, performance skills, independent practice skills and how to effectively express yourself through another language. This course is significantly harder than grade 10 and requires committment and motivation from you to be successful. Talent is not necessary, but discipline is.
This blog will be used to keep you in touch with upcoming activities, some classroom notes and your comments. I will also post resources and pictures or videos of class activities. Check back regularly (at least once a week).

Course Outline
Music 112 is an advanced music course that requires commitment to music and dedication to learning. Students will be expected to practice everyday and be prepared to perform publicly. However, students are not required to be musically talented as skills can be developed with hard work and a positive attitude.

Your class mark will consist of assignments (20%), written tests (20%), participation (10%) portfolio (20%) and performances (30%).

I expect all students to abide by this code in my class.
General Procedures
1. ALWAYS put your name on anything that you hand in – I cannot mark your work if I don’t know who it belongs too. Keep everything in your portfolio.
2. Presentation counts for a lot -if I can’t read it I cannot mark it and therefore you cannot get marks.
3. Late assignments will only be accepted on a case-by-case basis.
4. Notify the music teacher before using any equipment.
5. When using the keyboards – No food and drink, turn the power off and use headphones when you are done.
6. Textbooks are school property – please take good care of them.
7. Missed tests and assignments should be completed as soon as you are back in school. It is your responsibility to bring in a note and make arrangements.
8. In order to succeed in my class you have to attend and try. Remember to do your homework and practice regularly. Participate in class, practice is the only way you will improve.
